When Is The Right Time For Extended Family Photos?
Big question with many answers!
Based on my experience shooting family photos, there are a few times of the year to coordinate these extended family photos with the least amount of stress.
The absolute stress-free time of the year is sometime in the summer, when the kids are out of school. Plan a big family BBQ at a park and have the photographer meet you there! Capture all the cousins playing kickball and the uncles grilling corn. Get group shots galore, while quickly being able to get sips of water and snack on some chips between takes. No one is pressed for time, the sun is out until late, no chance of bad weather, all smiles.
Another easy chance at family photos is New Years Eve parties. The stress of holiday prep is done with and all is well by the last day of the year. Family is still in town for the final holiday, maybe family friends are joining you too! The party doesn’t really begin until later in the evening, so why not make the most of the day and get that family photo in?
Thanksgiving and Christmas is another time of the year where everyone is together and we can finally get everyone in one picture. However, these come with stress! Finish the cooking and shopping before the shoot to ensure smiles and laughs on shoot day.
Birthdays are a perfect opportunity to get those extended family photos in! It is a fun time all around, cake, laughs, gifts, dressed up or down, whatever fits your family’s personality.
Choosing the right time to take extended family photos is essential for capturing genuine moments and ensuring everyone is relaxed and present. Planning the session during a natural break in festivities, such as after a meal or before the main event, can reduce stress and allow for smoother coordination. Early evening or late afternoon offers ideal lighting that enhances the quality of the images without causing discomfort. Ultimately, selecting a time that accommodates the majority and fits harmoniously into your event schedule will result in photographs that truly reflect your family’s connection and celebration.
